Americans’ teeth are, unfortunately, not getting any healthier. Modern society gives the best dental care in the history of the world, but sadly, many people do not take advantage of this care or even have the recommended minimum amount of dental visits per year. It’s not uncommon to hear of people going several years between check-ups! What is the reason for all this delay in getting proper care? People have a variety of reasons, but most of the time, it comes down to cost. Dental work is expensive, and without dental insurance, most families can’t afford to send the entire family in for the full number of recommended cleanings and consultations.
Dental insurance seems like a luxury to those who don’t have it. Most consumers who carry it purchase it from their employers through a comprehensive benefits package. Others obtain it through their spouse’s employer, and still others purchase it individually.
The latter group is small, but it is still possible to buy coverage without a group plan.
When shopping for dental insurance, there are a few key ideas to keep in mind. First, it’s vital to understand the coverage that’s being purchased. (The same is true for those on an employer-sponsored plan.) Most dental plans are surprisingly limited in what they will actually cover. Preventive care is usually covered, as well as basic restorative services such as fillings. However, most major work is not covered, including crowns, veneers, implants, or bruxism appliances. Whitening is also usually not covered. Since there are so many large, and usually vital, items that aren’t covered, it is extremely important for consumers to understand the coverage they are purchasing so they can make an informed decision about their purchase, instead of being surprised later on with bills they thought would be covered.
The biggest benefit to carrying dental insurance is the preventive care that’s offered, and usually covered, by the plan.
Preventive maintenance, including regular cleanings and consultations with a dentist, is the single most important key in preventing large costs down the road. For people with large families, carrying dental insurance becomes even more important, as a family of six would require one person to have a cleaning every month out of the year. Having these cleanings covered by the plan is extremely helpful and will undoubtedly save the family bundles of money down the road by preventing higher cost services from being necessary.
